From the Acting Principal – 31 May 2019

Edu-Dance

Edu-Dance is back in term three and classes will run on Monday afternoons and all day Fridays. A note will be sent home with students on Tuesday with all the details. The celebration concert will be in week ten of term three but the exact details are still yet to be confirmed with Edu-Dance. I will let the community know well in advance of the date and time of the concert in a future newsletter.

Science Laboratory

Our new Science Laboratory is now finished and we are waiting for the furniture to arrive before teachers can put it to good use. This will complement the introduction of STEM into our school and provide a well-equipped space for students to explore and conduct hands on experiments. With an estimated 75% of our future jobs requiring critical thinking and problem solving skills, our STEM approach will give students at Glendale an opportunity to engage in this important learning.

Staff Professional Learning in Indigenous History

In week 3 our whole staff took part in the Blanket Activity. The aim of the Blanket Activity is to foster truth, understanding, respect and reconciliation among Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples. The staff were asked to take on roles of the Indigenous people of Australia through this 90-minute interactive workshop. We all stood on blankets which got smaller as disease, policies and particular events in history affected the Aboriginal people. It was an emotional and informative activity as the facilitators shared their personal stories thought out the activity. The feedback from the sharing circle at the conclusion of the activity was positive and staff felt it was a worthwhile experience. As part of our NAIDOC day the senior children will be participating in a student version of the Blanket Activity which relates to the West Australian Humanities and Social Science Curriculum.

Family Vacations During School Terms

Families are encouraged to travel on holiday during school holidays.  If this is not possible, please fill out the application form in the school office prior to the event to request approval from the Principal.

Use of School Grounds

We welcome parents to use the school grounds after pick up time once they have taken over duty of care for their children. Any students that are not collected should come up to the office where we will assist them. No unsupervised students should be in the play area after pick up time. Due to security the teaching blocks are locked after pick up time and therefore there may not be access to school toilets. A reminder not to bring dogs on school grounds during the times that the school is open for operation which is between 8am and 4pm.

Room 12 Assembly – Wednesday 5 June

Room 12 is hosting the school assembly next Wednesday and we invite all parents to join us for morning tea, after the assembly, in the staff room.

Vacant Parent Position on the School Board

The school would like to invite parents to nominate for a vacant position on the School board. The membership would be for two years. All nominations are to be received by the Acting Principal before 4pm 17 June. Please send your nominations to Jennifer.graham@education.wa.edu.au or drop off in a sealed envelope to the office. Nominations forms will be available on the website and in the office on Tuesday 4 June.
